Can I Use My eSIM on Multiple Devices? (iPad, Watch, Laptop)
The Short Answer
An eSIM profile is tied to one device at a time. You cannot install the same eSIM on your phone and your tablet simultaneously, and you cannot split a single plan across multiple devices. Once a QR code has been scanned and the profile installed on a device, that QR code is used up.
That said, you have good options for keeping your other devices connected while traveling. Here is how each device type works with travel eSIMs.
Phones: One eSIM Per Device
Your Only eSIM plan installs on one phone. That phone becomes your connected device. If you want to switch the eSIM to a different phone mid-trip, you would need to delete the profile from the first phone and install it on the second — but be aware that most eSIM profiles cannot be re-downloaded once deleted. This means deleting it could result in losing the plan entirely.
The safest approach: decide which phone you want to use before you install, and stick with that device for the duration of the plan.
iPads and Tablets
If your iPad or Android tablet supports eSIM (most recent iPad models do, and some Android tablets are adding support), you have two options:
Option A: Buy a separate eSIM plan for the tablet. Purchase a second plan from onlyesim.com and install it directly on the tablet. This gives the tablet its own independent data connection.
Option B: Use your phone's hotspot. Keep the eSIM on your phone and share the connection with your tablet via hotspot. This is usually the more cost-effective approach since you only pay for one plan. See our hotspot setup guide for step-by-step instructions.
For most travelers, Option B is the better choice. You save money, and your tablet stays connected whenever your phone is nearby.
Apple Watch
Apple Watch cellular requires a carrier plan paired with your iPhone's phone number. Travel eSIMs, including Only eSIM, are data-only and do not include a phone number or carrier pairing — so they are not compatible with Apple Watch cellular.
Your Apple Watch still works while traveling, though. It connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth when nearby and via Wi-Fi when on the same network. As long as your iPhone has an active eSIM data connection, your watch receives notifications and messages through the phone. The only thing you lose is standalone connectivity when the phone is not nearby.
Laptops
Many modern laptops support eSIM, including Microsoft Surface Pro, certain Lenovo ThinkPads, HP Elites, and select other models with built-in cellular modems. If your laptop has eSIM support, you can purchase a separate Only eSIM plan and install it directly on the laptop — just as you would on a phone.
To check if your laptop supports eSIM:
- Windows: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Cellular. If this option exists, your laptop has a cellular modem.
- Mac: Most MacBooks do not currently support eSIM. Use your phone's hotspot instead.
For laptops without eSIM support, hotspot tethering from your phone is the way to go.
Best Approach for Multiple Devices
If you are traveling with a phone, tablet, and laptop, here is the most practical and cost-effective setup:
- Buy one eSIM plan for your phone — choose a plan with enough data to cover all your devices
- Use your phone's hotspot to share the connection with your tablet and laptop
- Budget extra data — tethering uses significantly more data than phone-only usage
Laptops connected via hotspot download system updates, sync cloud storage, and load full desktop websites — all of which consume far more data than phone browsing. Budget 50 to 100 percent more data than you would use on your phone alone. If you typically use 3 GB during a week-long trip, plan for 5 to 6 GB if tethering a laptop regularly.
Tips for Managing Data Across Devices
- Turn off automatic updates on your laptop before connecting to the hotspot — Windows and macOS updates can consume gigabytes.
- Pause cloud sync services like Dropbox and iCloud while tethered to conserve data.
- Disconnect idle devices from the hotspot. Do not leave your laptop connected if you are not actively using it.
- Monitor your data balance through the Only eSIM dashboard to stay ahead of usage. See our data balance guide for how.
Need Help Deciding?
If your tablet is mostly for reading and light browsing, hotspot sharing is plenty. If your laptop needs a constant connection for video calls or heavy downloads, a dedicated eSIM plan might be worth it. Questions? Our team at onlyesim.com/support can help you pick the right setup.
