Data questions
How much data do I need for travel?
Light users (email, messaging, maps) typically need 1-3 GB per week. Moderate users (social media, occasional video) need 3-7 GB per week. Heavy users (video streaming, video calls) may need 7-15+ GB per week.
How much data does video streaming use?
About 0.7 GB/hr for SD (480p), 1.5 GB/hr for HD (720p), and 3 GB/hr for Full HD (1080p). Reducing quality in your streaming app settings saves significant data.
Does Google Maps use a lot of data?
Google Maps uses approximately 5-10 MB per hour of active navigation. Downloading offline maps before your trip can save significant data.
Can I top up my eSIM if I run out?
Top-ups are available for eligible eSIMs. Open your plan to check the available options, price and validity. Do not assume every plan supports a top-up.
How much data does social media use?
Social media apps use approximately 0.3-0.8 GB per hour depending on content. TikTok and Instagram Reels use more data due to auto-playing videos.
Should I get a bigger plan or top up?
Compare the data allowance, validity and total price against your trip estimate. If you prefer a smaller plan, check its top-up availability first. This calculator does not assume you can add more data later.
