How to Avoid Roaming Charges on Your Primary SIM While Using a Travel eSIM
The Whole Point of a Travel eSIM
One of the biggest reasons people buy a travel eSIM is to avoid the shocking roaming bill that shows up after a trip. An Only eSIM plan gives you prepaid data at a fraction of what your home carrier charges for international roaming.
But here's the catch: if your phone is misconfigured, your home carrier can still charge you roaming fees even though you have a perfectly good eSIM installed. This happens when your phone accidentally uses your physical SIM for data instead of the eSIM.
The good news: it takes about two minutes to set things up correctly, and then you're fully protected.
The Three Settings That Matter
Avoiding roaming charges comes down to three things:
- Turn OFF data roaming on your physical/home SIM
- Turn ON data roaming on your eSIM
- Set your eSIM as the default data line
That's it. Get those three right, and your home carrier won't handle any data traffic while you're abroad.
Step-by-Step for iPhone
First, disable data roaming on your home SIM:
- Open Settings
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)
- Tap the name of your physical/home SIM line
- Toggle Data Roaming to OFF
Next, enable data roaming on your eSIM:
- Go back to Cellular settings
- Tap the name of your eSIM line
- Toggle Data Roaming to ON
Then, set your eSIM as the data line:
- Go back to Cellular settings
- Tap Cellular Data
- Select your eSIM plan
Finally, disable the automatic fallback:
- Go back to Cellular settings
- Find Allow Cellular Data Switching
- Toggle it OFF
This last step is easy to miss but important. When "Allow Cellular Data Switching" is on, your iPhone can silently switch to your physical SIM for data if the eSIM signal drops momentarily. That silent switch is exactly how people end up with surprise roaming charges.
Step-by-Step for Android (Google Pixel, Stock Android)
- Open Settings
- Tap Network & Internet
- Tap SIMs
- Tap your physical/home SIM and make sure Roaming is OFF
- Go back and tap your eSIM and make sure Roaming is ON
- Set the eSIM as your preferred SIM for mobile data
Step-by-Step for Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings
- Tap Connections
- Tap SIM manager
- Under Mobile data, select your eSIM
- Go back and tap Mobile networks
- Select your physical SIM and toggle Data Roaming to OFF
- Select your eSIM and toggle Data Roaming to ON
For Maximum Protection: Disable Your Home SIM Entirely
If you want to eliminate any possibility of charges from your home carrier — including minor call and text roaming fees — you can disable your physical SIM line while abroad:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap your home SIM > toggle Turn On This Line to OFF
- Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap your home SIM > toggle it OFF
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > tap your home SIM > toggle it OFF
The tradeoff: you won't be able to receive calls or texts on your home number while the line is disabled. For most travelers, this is fine — you can use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or other messaging apps over your eSIM data for all communication.
Use Wi-Fi Calling and Messaging Apps
Since your Only eSIM plan is data-only (no voice minutes or SMS), use data-based alternatives for communication:
- WhatsApp — calls and messages over data
- FaceTime — audio and video calls (iPhone to iPhone/Mac)
- Telegram, Signal, or Messenger — messaging and voice calls
- Wi-Fi Calling — if your home carrier supports it, you can make regular phone calls over your eSIM's data connection
These apps use your eSIM data, so there are no additional charges beyond your prepaid plan.
Quick-Reference Checklist
Before you leave for the airport, run through this list:
- [ ] eSIM installed (keep the line turned off until you arrive at your destination)
- [ ] Data roaming ON for eSIM line

- [ ] eSIM set as default data line
- [ ] "Allow Cellular Data Switching" OFF (iPhone)
