How to Switch Between eSIM and Physical SIM
You Don't Need to Remove Anything
One of the best things about dual-SIM phones is that switching between your eSIM and physical SIM is entirely a software setting. You don't need to pop out a SIM tray or delete a profile.
Both SIM lines can stay installed and active on your phone at all times. Switching just means telling your phone which line to use for data.
When You'd Want to Switch
Here are the most common scenarios:
- Arriving at your destination — switch data from your physical SIM to your travel eSIM
- Returning home — switch data back to your physical SIM
- Entering a country not covered by your eSIM plan — switch to your physical SIM or a different eSIM
- Troubleshooting — temporarily switch to your physical SIM to confirm it's an eSIM issue, not a phone issue
How to Switch on iPhone
- Open Settings
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)
- Tap Cellular Data
- You'll see a list of your SIM lines — select the one you want to use for internet
- Choose your eSIM when traveling
- Choose your physical SIM when you're back home
That's all there is to it. The switch happens immediately.
Reminder: If you're switching to your eSIM for travel, make sure data roaming is enabled on that line. And consider turning off Allow Cellular Data Switching to prevent your phone from silently falling back to the other line.
How to Switch on Google Pixel and Stock Android
- Open Settings
- Tap Network & Internet
- Tap SIMs
- Tap the SIM you want to use for data
- Set it as the preferred SIM for mobile data
Android will ask you to confirm the switch. Tap OK and your data connection will move to the selected line within a few seconds.
How to Switch on Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings
- Tap Connections
- Tap SIM manager
- Under Mobile data, tap to select the SIM you want to use
- Confirm the switch when prompted
Samsung's SIM manager gives you a clear overview of which SIM handles data, calls, and texts, making it easy to see your current setup at a glance.
Both Lines Stay Active
An important thing to understand: switching the data line doesn't deactivate the other SIM. Here's what happens with a typical travel setup:
- eSIM handles all mobile data (internet, apps, maps, messaging apps)
- Physical SIM stays active for incoming and outgoing phone calls and SMS texts
Both lines are "on" simultaneously. Your phone manages them in parallel, which is exactly how dual-SIM is designed to work.
Tips for a Smooth Switch
Before your trip:
- Install your eSIM at home over Wi-Fi (don't wait until you land)
- Keep the eSIM line turned off until you arrive at your destination (especially important for instant activation plans where validity starts at installation)
- When you arrive, switch the default data line to your eSIM and enable data roaming on the eSIM line
- Disable data roaming on your physical SIM to avoid roaming charges
When you return home:
- Switch the default data line back to your physical SIM
- You can disable the eSIM line if you want, but it's not necessary
- Keep the eSIM profile installed for your next trip to the same destination
Can You Disable a SIM Line Without Deleting It?
Yes. If you want to fully deactivate a SIM line without removing it:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the SIM line > toggle Turn On This Line to OFF
- Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap the SIM > toggle it OFF
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > tap the SIM > toggle it OFF
This is useful if you want to make absolutely sure a line doesn't use any network resources while you're abroad. But for most people, simply switching the default data line is enough.
