Can't Connect to the Network After Landing Abroad
A Very Common Scenario
You did everything right. You bought your eSIM, installed it before your trip, and confirmed the QR code scanned successfully. But now you've landed and your phone has no data.
Don't worry — this happens to a lot of travelers, and the fix is usually quick. Your phone just needs a few settings adjustments to connect to a foreign network.
Check 1: Turn On the eSIM Line
If you installed your eSIM at home but didn't activate the line, it won't automatically start working when you land. The profile is on your phone, but the line itself may be switched off.
On iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular, find your eSIM plan, and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled. Then tap Cellular Data and select the eSIM as your data line.
On Android: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs, tap the eSIM, and enable it. Set it as your mobile data SIM.
Check 2: Enable Data Roaming
This is the step most people miss. Travel eSIMs work by roaming, and phones block roaming data by default to protect you from surprise charges. With a prepaid travel eSIM, there are no surprise charges — you've already paid for the data.
On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the eSIM plan > turn on Data Roaming.
On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap the eSIM > enable Roaming.
This is the single most important step. If Data Roaming is off, nothing else matters.
Check 3: Give It a Minute
After enabling your eSIM and Data Roaming, your phone needs time to find and register with a local network. This usually takes 1-2 minutes, but it can take up to 5 minutes in some locations.
Be patient. If you see a carrier name appear at the top of your screen, the connection process is working.
Check 4: Toggle Airplane Mode
If your phone hasn't connected after a couple of minutes, give it a nudge.
- Turn on Airplane Mode
- Wait 30 seconds
- Turn off Airplane Mode
This forces your phone to scan for networks from scratch. It's the equivalent of rebooting your network connection without restarting the whole phone.
Check 5: Manually Select a Network
Sometimes automatic network selection picks an incompatible carrier, or it doesn't find any carrier at all. Manually selecting one fixes this.
On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the eSIM plan > Network Selection > turn off Automatic > choose a carrier from the list.
On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap the eSIM > Network operators > turn off automatic > select a carrier.
Try each available carrier until one connects with data. If no carriers appear, double-check that Data Roaming is on, then try again.
Check 6: Verify Your Destination Is Covered
Log in to your account at onlyesim.com and check the coverage details for your plan. Confirm that the country you're in is listed. Some regional plans cover multiple countries but not every country in a region — it's worth double-checking.
Pro Tip: Test Before You Travel
The best way to avoid connection issues abroad is to set everything up before you leave.
- Install the eSIM while connected to WiFi at home
- Go to your Cellular/SIM settings and make sure the eSIM line is visible
- Set the eSIM as your default data line
- Enable Data Roaming
You won't get data at home (the eSIM only works in your destination), but you'll confirm that the profile is installed correctly and the settings are ready. When you land, your phone will connect to the local network. Note: for instant activation plans, the validity period may already be counting from when you installed — check your plan details.
