Samsung Galaxy eSIM Troubleshooting: Fix Common Issues

Before You Start

Samsung Galaxy phones use One UI, which has different settings paths from stock Android. If you're following a generic Android guide and can't find the right menu, that's why. This guide uses Samsung's exact menu names.

Confirm your eSIM is installed: go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager and look for your eSIM. If it's not listed, install it first.

Step 1: Toggle Airplane Mode

This forces your Samsung to drop all connections and search for networks again.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification shade
  2. Tap the Airplane Mode icon
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Tap it again to turn it off

Step 2: Make Sure the eSIM Is Enabled

Your eSIM may be installed but not turned on.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager
  2. Find your eSIM in the list and tap it
  3. Make sure the toggle is turned on

Step 3: Set the eSIM as Your Mobile Data SIM

Samsung uses SIM manager for dual SIM preferences, which works differently from stock Android.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager
  2. Tap Mobile data
  3. Select your eSIM from the list

Step 4: Turn On Data Roaming

Travel eSIMs work by roaming on local partner networks. Samsung blocks this by default.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks
  2. Toggle Data Roaming to ON
  3. If prompted with a warning, confirm by tapping OK

This is the number one fix. Without Data Roaming enabled, your travel eSIM cannot connect to any network.

Step 5: Manually Select a Network

If your phone can't automatically find a compatible carrier, try selecting one manually.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks
  2. Tap Network operators
  3. Turn off Select automatically
  4. Wait for the list of available networks to load (up to 30 seconds)
  5. Try connecting to each carrier until you get a signal

Tip: If the list comes up empty, double-check that Data Roaming is on and try again.

Step 6: Check for Software Updates

Samsung pushes both Android and One UI updates that can fix eSIM bugs.

  1. Go to Settings > Software update
  2. Tap Download and install
  3. If an update is available, install it and restart your phone

Step 7: Restart Your Phone

A full restart clears stuck network processes.

  1. Press and hold the side button and volume down button
  2. Tap Restart

On newer Samsung phones, you may need to swipe to the power menu from the notification shade if the side button opens Bixby.

Step 8: Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)

This wipes all network configurations and gives your phone a clean start.

  1. Go to Settings > General management > Reset
  2. Tap Reset network settings
  3. Confirm with your PIN or password

What this resets: Saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, mobile data preferences, and VPN configurations. What it keeps: Your apps, photos, eSIM profiles, and personal data.

After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi, re-enable Data Roaming, and set your eSIM as the mobile data SIM again.

Samsung-Specific Issues

Knox Security Blocking eSIM

If your Samsung is managed by an employer through Samsung Knox, eSIM installation or activation may be restricted. Check with your IT department to see if Knox policies are blocking eSIM profiles.

Bixby Routines Interfering with Network

If you use Bixby Routines to automate settings (like turning off mobile data at certain times), these routines can override your eSIM configuration. Go to Settings > Modes and Routines > Routines and disable any rules that affect mobile data, airplane mode, or network settings while using your travel eSIM.

One UI Battery Optimization

Samsung's battery management can put background processes to sleep, including those that maintain your eSIM connection. If your data drops when the screen is off, go to Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits and remove any SIM-related processes from the sleeping apps lists.

Dual SIM Preferred Settings

If you have both a physical SIM and an eSIM, set your eSIM as preferred for Mobile data in Settings > Connections > SIM manager. You can keep your physical SIM for calls and texts to stay reachable on your home number.

Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold

The steps above work identically on foldable Samsung devices. If you're having difficulty navigating on the cover screen, unfold the device and use the main display for the full settings interface.
