Making Calls, Texts, and Using WhatsApp/iMessage with a Data-Only eSIM
The Most Important Thing to Know
Only eSIM plans are data-only. That means you cannot make traditional phone calls or send regular SMS text messages through the eSIM itself. There is no phone number attached to your eSIM line.
But here is the good news: this barely matters. Nearly every way you communicate today already uses the internet, and your eSIM gives you a fast, reliable internet connection wherever you are traveling. Let's walk through exactly what works and how.
What You CAN Do with a Data-Only eSIM
Any app or service that sends messages or makes calls over the internet will work perfectly with your Only eSIM data connection. That includes:
- WhatsApp — messages, voice calls, video calls, group chats
- iMessage — blue-bubble texts between Apple devices
- FaceTime — audio and video calls
- Telegram — messages, voice calls, video calls
- Signal — messages and calls
- Zoom — video meetings and calls
- Skype — calls and messages
- Facebook Messenger — messages, voice, and video calls
- LINE, WeChat, Viber, KakaoTalk — and any other internet-based messaging app
If it connects through the internet, it works through your eSIM.
How WhatsApp Works with Your eSIM
WhatsApp is the most popular communication tool for international travelers, and it works seamlessly with a data-only eSIM. Here is why:
WhatsApp is tied to the phone number you registered with (your home number), but it sends all messages and calls over your internet connection — not through your cellular carrier. So when you switch your data to your Only eSIM line, WhatsApp keeps working exactly as before. Same number, same chats, same contacts.
- Make sure WhatsApp is installed and up to date before you travel
- Set your Only eSIM as your default data line (see our data line guide)
- Open WhatsApp and use it normally — messages, calls, video calls all route over data
Pro tip: Download any media or conversations you might need before you leave, just in case you hit a spotty connection area.
How iMessage and FaceTime Work
If you are an iPhone user, iMessage and FaceTime will continue to work as long as:
- Your Apple ID is signed in on your device
- Your Only eSIM is providing a data connection
- iMessage is toggled on in Settings > Messages
iMessage sends texts through Apple's servers over the internet, so blue bubbles will still appear for conversations with other Apple users. FaceTime Audio and FaceTime Video calls also route entirely over data.
One thing to note: If you are texting someone who does not have an iPhone (green bubbles / SMS), that message would need to go through your home carrier as a traditional text. If your home SIM is inactive or removed, those green-bubble messages will not send. Stick to WhatsApp or another messaging app for non-iPhone contacts while traveling.
How to Make Voice Calls Abroad
Since you cannot place traditional phone calls through a data-only eSIM, use one of these internet-based alternatives:
- WhatsApp calls — tap the phone icon in any WhatsApp conversation. Call quality is excellent on a solid data connection.
- FaceTime Audio — available between Apple devices. Tap the phone icon in a FaceTime or Messages conversation.
- Telegram calls — open a contact in Telegram and tap the phone icon.
- Zoom or Google Meet — great for scheduled calls, especially work calls.
All of these use your data connection and cost nothing beyond the data you are already using from your plan.
Emergency Calls Work on Any Active SIM Line
This is important: emergency calls (911, 112, 999) are routed through the cellular network, not the internet. Your phone can place an emergency call through any active SIM line — whether that is your physical SIM, your eSIM, or both. Emergency calls will connect even without an active data plan or credit on the line.
In most countries, phones can even place emergency calls with no SIM at all, as long as the phone can reach a cellular tower. That said, keeping at least one SIM line active (physical SIM or eSIM) ensures the most reliable emergency access.
Before You Travel: A Quick Checklist
- Download and update your messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc.)
- Let your frequent contacts know you will be reachable via WhatsApp or iMessage, not by regular phone calls
- Test a WhatsApp or FaceTime call before you leave to make sure everything is set up
- Keep your home SIM inserted for emergency calls and SMS verification codes
A data-only eSIM does not limit your ability to communicate — it just routes everything through the internet. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, and dozens of other apps all work beautifully over your Only eSIM data connection.
