Common eSIM Error Messages and What They Mean

How to Use This Guide

Find the error message you're seeing on your phone and jump to that section. Each entry explains what's causing the error and how to fix it.

Pro tip: Before trying any fix, take a screenshot of the error message. If you end up needing to contact support, having the exact wording helps us diagnose the issue much faster.

"eSIM Cannot Be Added"

This typically means your device is rejecting the eSIM profile before it can be installed.

Common causes:

  • Your phone is carrier-locked. A locked device will only accept eSIM profiles from the locking carrier. Check your lock status: on iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for "No SIM restrictions." Full carrier lock guide.
  • Maximum eSIM profiles reached. Devices can only store a limited number of eSIM profiles (usually 5-10). Delete old or expired profiles to free up a slot.
  • Incompatible device. Some older phones don't support eSIM at all. Check if your device is compatible.

Fix: Verify your phone is unlocked, delete unused eSIM profiles, and confirm your device supports eSIM. Then try the installation again.

"Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change"

This is an iOS-specific error that usually points to a communication failure between your iPhone and the eSIM provisioning server.

Common causes:

  • Server timeout during the download
  • Unstable WiFi connection (especially hotel or airport networks with login pages)
  • Temporary Apple server congestion

Fix:

  1. Restart your iPhone (hold side + volume button, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, turn on)
  2. Connect to a different WiFi network if possible
  3. Try again — this error often resolves on the second or third attempt

"This Code Is No Longer Valid"

The QR code has been flagged as already redeemed or expired.

Common causes:

  • The eSIM was already installed on your device (it may be sitting in your cellular settings, turned off)
  • The QR code expired before you could use it
  • A previous installation attempt partially consumed the code

Fix:

  1. Check if the eSIM is already installed: go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs (Android) and look for the plan
  2. If it's not there, contact Only eSIM support with your order number — we can check the code status and reissue it if needed

"Cellular Plans Cannot Be Added at This Time"

This is almost always a server-side problem, not something wrong with your phone.

Common causes:

  • Apple or Google eSIM activation servers are temporarily overloaded
  • Scheduled maintenance or a brief outage on the provider platform

Fix:

  1. Wait 15-30 minutes and try again
  2. Restart your phone
  3. Check for any pending iOS or Android system updates and install them
  4. If it persists after an hour, contact support — we can confirm whether there's a known outage

"PDP Authentication Failure"

This error appears after installation, when the eSIM tries to connect to a data network. It means the APN (Access Point Name) configuration is incorrect or missing.

Fix:

  1. Go to your eSIM's APN settings and update them manually. Step-by-step APN configuration guide.
  2. The correct APN details are included in your order confirmation email
  3. After updating, toggle Airplane Mode on and off to force a reconnection

"No Service" or "SOS Only"

Your eSIM is installed but can't find a network to connect to.

Common causes:

  • Data Roaming is turned off (this is the most frequent cause)
  • The eSIM line isn't set as your active data line
  • Your phone hasn't connected to a local carrier yet
  • You're in an area with no coverage from the eSIM's partner networks

Fix: This has its own dedicated troubleshooting guide because there are several steps to work through. Go to the No Service fix guide.

"Invalid Activation Code"

This appears when you try to enter the eSIM activation details manually and something doesn't match.

Common causes:

  • A typo in the SM-DP+ address or activation code
  • Extra spaces copied along with the code
  • A corrupted or partially loaded QR code

Fix:

  1. If using manual entry, double-check every character against your order email — the codes are long and easy to mistype
  2. Try scanning the QR code instead of typing the code manually
  3. If the QR code won't scan, try zooming in or adjusting screen brightness on the device displaying it

"SIM Failure"

This is a less common error that suggests a hardware-level issue.

Common causes:

  • Temporary glitch in the phone's eSIM chip
  • Software conflict after an OS update
  • Rare hardware defect in the eSIM module

Fix:

  1. Restart your phone completely — power off, wait 30 seconds, power on
  2. Reset network settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings (iPhone) or Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth (Android)
  3. If the error persists after a restart and network reset, the issue may be with the device itself. Contact Apple Support or your phone manufacturer
