eSIM Won't Download — Common Errors and Fixes

Before Troubleshooting

Before diving into specific errors, make sure the basics are covered:

  • Your phone supports eSIM. Not sure? Check our compatibility guide.
  • Your phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked phone will reject eSIM installations from other providers. How to check.
  • You're connected to the internet. WiFi is recommended, but mobile data from a physical SIM works too. The eSIM profile needs to download from a server.

If all three check out and you're still hitting errors, find your specific error message below.

Error: "eSIM Cannot Be Added" or "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change"

This is one of the most common errors, and it usually comes down to one of two causes.

Cause 1: Your device is carrier-locked. Your phone may be locked to a specific carrier, which prevents eSIM profiles from other providers from being installed.

Fix: Check your lock status:

  • iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About and look for "No SIM restrictions". If it says anything else, your phone is locked.
  • Android: Try Settings > About Phone > SIM Lock Status, or contact your carrier.

If your phone is locked, you'll need to contact your carrier to request an unlock before you can use any third-party eSIM.

Cause 2: You've reached the maximum number of eSIM profiles. Every device has a limit on how many eSIM profiles it can store.

Fix: Go to your eSIM settings and delete any old or expired profiles you no longer need to free up a slot. Here's how to delete an eSIM profile.

Error: "This Code Is No Longer Valid"

This means the QR code has been flagged as already used or expired.

Possible causes:

  • The eSIM was already installed on your phone (or another device)
  • The QR code has expired
  • A server-side issue is preventing recognition

Fix:

  1. Check if the eSIM is already installed. Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs (Android) and look for the plan in your list. It might be installed but turned off.
  2. If it's not installed, the QR code may have been consumed by a previous attempt — even a failed one. Contact Only eSIM support with your order number and we'll check the status and reissue the code if possible.

Error: "Cellular Plans Cannot Be Added at This Time"

This is usually a temporary server-side issue, not a problem with your phone or your plan.

Possible causes:

  • Apple or Google's eSIM activation servers are experiencing issues
  • Temporary network congestion
  • A brief outage on the eSIM provider's platform

Fix:

  1. Wait 15 minutes and try again. This resolves the issue more often than you'd expect.
  2. Restart your phone — a full power cycle, not just a lock/unlock.
  3. Try a different WiFi network. Some networks (especially hotel or airport WiFi with captive portals) can interfere with the download.
  4. If the error persists after an hour, contact support — there may be a broader outage we can confirm.

Error: "No Connection" or "Cannot Connect to Server"

Your phone can't reach the eSIM download server. This is a connectivity problem.

Fix:

  1. Check your internet connection. Open a browser and load any website to confirm you're actually online.
  2. Switch WiFi networks if possible. Public WiFi, especially networks with login pages, can block the specific connections needed for eSIM downloads.
  3. Try mobile data. If you have an active physical SIM with data, switch to cellular data for the download.
  4. Disable any VPN you might have running. VPNs can interfere with the eSIM provisioning servers.
  5. Check if your firewall or DNS settings are blocking connections. If you use custom DNS (like Pi-hole), temporarily switch back to automatic DNS.

General Fixes That Solve Most Issues

If you're not seeing a specific error message, or the fixes above didn't help, try these in order:

  1. Restart your phone. Power it fully off, wait 10 seconds, power back on.
  2. Update your operating system. Go to Settings > General > Software Update (iPhone) or Settings > System > System Update (Android). Outdated software can cause eSIM compatibility issues.
  3. Reset network settings. This clears WiFi passwords and network configs, but can resolve stubborn installation failures. Full instructions here.
  4. Try manual entry instead of QR code. Your purchase email includes an SM-DP+ address and activation code. Enter these manually instead of scanning — this bypasses any QR code scanning issues.
